Speaking at the ceremony, the Chief Minister emphasized that the institute is a response to the exorbitant costs of organ transplants in the private sector, which often push families into financial ruin. “This institution is an exemplary intervention by the State to ensure that life-saving transplants are affordable and accessible to the common man,” he stated. The project is being funded by the Kerala Infrastructure Investment Fund Board (KIIFB), with the first phase estimated to cost ₹299 crore plus an additional ₹99 crore for state-of-the-art medical equipment.
Health Minister Veena George, who presided over the function, described the day as a milestone in Kerala’s medical history. She announced that the government would soon introduce a scheme to provide post-transplant medications at the lowest prices in the country. Once fully operational, the institute aims to perform over 2,500 varied transplants annually—including liver, kidney, heart, and lung surgeries—under one roof. The eight-storey facility will also serve as a premier research and training hub, offering 31 specialized academic courses in transplant medicine. (KeralaNews.Gov)
