BHUBANESWAR: The BJP government in Odisha has made education completely free from Anganwadi (KG) to Post-Graduation (PG). Students studying in government colleges and universities across Odisha will no longer have to pay any fees. With this landmark move, Odisha has become the first state in the country to implement free education from Anganwadi to PG. The historic declaration was made by Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on the occasion of his government completing two years in office. This decision will directly benefit more than 10 lakh students across Odisha.
Tuition and academic fees will be completely waived in all state-run educational institutions, including schools, colleges, and universities. The primary objective of this scheme is to ensure uninterrupted higher education for girls and children belonging to economically backward families. Alongside this, the government has also announced free bus travel for students appearing for the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET).
Notably, Odisha already has the ‘Green Passage Scheme’ in place, which ensures free higher education for orphaned children who have lost their parents. Through this ongoing initiative, tuition fees, hostel accommodation, and food are provided completely free of cost by the state.
“This decision will immensely benefit all students in the state, especially the economically weaker sections and girls. Perhaps, such a holistic step in the education sector is being implemented for the first time across the country here in Odisha,” Chief Minister Majhi stated.
He further added that this decision would strengthen the foundation of the state’s youth and contribute to its long-term development. The Chief Minister also announced that four new universities will be established in Odisha soon, and 18 new government colleges have already been opened in rural areas. He envisioned making Odisha the higher education capital of Eastern India in the coming days.
