KANNUR: In a highly shocking and tragic incident reported from the district, a one-and-a-half-year-old boy who slipped into a deep comatose state following an alleged anesthesia complication at the Payyannur Baby Memorial Hospital has passed away. The deceased toddler has been identified as Devansh Shaurya, the only son of Suraj and Vijisha, residing in Eramam near Payyannur. The toddler was put on advanced life support and ventilator assistance at the Kannur Baby Memorial Hospital, but his blood pressure crashed dramatically today afternoon, leading doctors to officially declare him brain dead.
The unfortunate chain of events began four days ago when the toddler suffered minor injuries on his face and lips after accidentally falling down in the courtyard while playing at his house. He was initially rushed to the Primary Health Centre in Mathamangalam, where primary first aid was administered. For further management, the parents brought him to the Payyannur Baby Memorial Hospital to get the wounds stitched. To carry out the minor suturing procedure, the duty doctors administered anesthesia, immediately after which the child lost consciousness completely.
Realizing the gravity of the situation, the infant was urgently shifted to the fully-equipped Baby Memorial Hospital in Kannur for expert clinical intervention. Medical records indicate that the child was first examined by a senior pediatrician at the facility. However, the case was subsequently referred to a plastic surgeon. Since the toddler was crying and agitated, the surgeon recommended administering anesthesia. The official hospital management statement claims that the child suffered an unexpected cardiac arrest immediately after the anesthesia was injected.
Meanwhile, medical experts point out that standard protocols dictate general anesthesia is rarely administered to infants below two years of age unless it is a life-threatening emergency. Alleging gross medical negligence, the grieving relatives filed a formal police complaint, based on which the local police have registered a criminal case against the anesthesiologist, Dr. Anjali Poduval.
