‘Grim news’ on bird flu but country well prepared, environment minister says

Murray Watt, the federal environment minister, added that Australia is likely to see more mass mortality events, in line with what has happened overseas in other countries where bird flu has affected local wildlife populations.

I’m sorry to have such grim news at this hour of the morning but it’s best to be honest with people. As you know, Australia is the last continent on earth to have this strain of bird flu come to our shores. It was inevitable that it would come here at some point but the fact that it has taken a bit of time means that we are well prepared as a country.

But the reality is that we are going to see increased numbers of birds die as a result of this virus. And, of course, it can potentially get into mammals as well. So grim news ahead.
