Demolish Illegal Structures Voluntarily or Face Action, Warns Thiruvananthapuram Mayor V V Rajesh.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Thiruvananthapuram Corporation Mayor V V Rajesh stated that illegal constructions have become widespread across the city corporation limits for commercial purposes. He warned that violators must voluntarily demolish their unauthorized structures immediately, failing which the municipal corporation will intervene and tear them down directly. As part of this enforcement drive, the city corporation authorities had already demolished several illegally constructed buildings at the Palayam Market in the heart of the city on Sunday.

Currently, the buildings constructed under the Smart City project are in a state where trading cannot be carried out smoothly. These structures have been built in a manner that completely blocks proper ventilation. Even though the complex is situated in one of the most prime locations in the city, no one is willing to take these spaces on rent due to the lack of airflow. Furthermore, the entry pathways leading to the three-storey building have been encroached upon by various individuals for commercial setups. A major scam is reportedly thriving here, where people encroach on public pathways, set up temporary shops, and rent them out for up to ₹2,000 per day. As an initial phase of the crackdown, the demolition of such illegal structures has commenced from today. The Mayor added that remaining encroachments will be razed completely in the coming days after a thorough verification of documents.
