THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Kerala government has declared a public holiday on May 28 as well in view of Bakrid (Eid al-Adha). Initially, the holiday was scheduled only for May 27. Since the crescent moon was not sighted, Bakrid will now be celebrated in Kerala on May 28, prompting the government to declare a public holiday on that day too. An official order has been issued announcing a two-day public holiday, ensuring that the state gets consecutive holidays for the festival.
Reason for Extending the Holiday
According to the official calendar, the Bakrid holiday was originally fixed for May 27. However, because the moon was not sighted, the festival date shifted to May 28. Following this development, demands were raised from various quarters urging the government to declare a holiday on the actual day of the festival, May 28. Considering the convenience of the public and government employees, the state government issued an emergency order granting a two-day holiday.
