ERNAKULAM: In a tragic development regarding the missing case of a family in the Muvattupuzha River at Piravom, Ernakulam, the body of a six-year-old girl was recovered on Sunday morning. The Fire and Rescue Services department discovered the remains of the elder child during an intensive search operation. The body was located near the INTUC jetty, just meters away from the Excise jetty where the family is suspected to have jumped into the river. With this discovery, the bodies of all four family members have been retrieved.
The recovery of the young girl’s body comes on the third day after the family went missing in the water body. Earlier, the bodies of both parents and their two-year-old son were fished out of the river, and their respective inquest and post-mortem procedures have been successfully completed. According to the preliminary findings of the local police administration, severe financial crisis and accumulated debts are suspected to be the primary motives behind this devastating mass suicide. Investigating officers confirmed that the family had arrived in Piravom from Kothamangalam, though their official names and identities have been withheld from the public pending verification.
The horrific incident came to light on Saturday evening around 6:00 PM when local residents spotted bodies floating downstream and immediately alerted the police. Law enforcement officials rushed to the spot and retrieved the first three bodies. It was during the subsequent investigation that authorities learned about the presence of a fourth family member—the six-year-old girl. Although the rescue teams were informed a significant amount of time after the incident occurred, a continuous search operation managed to locate all victims.
