Madrid / Paris: Massive, out-of-control wildfires raging across France and Spain have forced the evacuation of more than 250,000 people from their homes and popular holiday resorts. Spanish firefighters were hoping to gain control over the blazes near the capital, Madrid, on Saturday, but officials warned that erratic and shifting winds threatened to fan the flames further as thick grey smoke blanketed the skies west of the city.
Carlos Novillo, head of emergency management for the Madrid regional government, stated that the wildfire near the capital was “at its peak and is currently beyond the capacity of firefighters to contain.” Emergency services are stretched to their limits as dry conditions and unpredictable wind patterns continue to hamper containment efforts across the affected zones.
According to Spain’s Interior Ministry, the flames have destroyed nearly 10,000 hectares (25,000 acres) in the Madrid region and between 13,000 and 15,000 hectares in the neighbouring province of Avila—a total combined area more than double the size of Paris. The ministry added that a total of 70,000 people have been evacuated so far in Spain alone as emergency teams fight to secure human lives.
