The court emphasized the need for transparency, stating that the TDB, as a body working under the Devaswom Act, must only act in a way that respects the religious institutions and the trust of the people. The court added that anything the TDB does must be within the limits of the law.
The case was brought forward by a public interest lawsuit filed by Ajeesh Kalathil Gopi, who argued that the summit is a political event and should not be held in the name of Lord Ayyappa.
The TDB’s lawyer, G. Biju, responded that the event is meant to promote Sabarimala as a global pilgrimage center and share the message of harmony and unity. He also stated that the summit will not use public money or TDB funds but will be financed through sponsorships.
The High Court noted that since the event is being held in a place of great reverence for devotees, it can only be allowed with the highest respect for its sacredness. The court will hear the case again on September 9.
