India Rolls Out Next-Gen Chip-Enabled e-Passports for Expats in UAE.

DUBAI/ABU DHABI: Indian expatriates in the United Arab Emirates are being urged to upgrade to the new chip-enabled e-Passport, a modern travel document designed to align with global security standards. The official rollout, which began on October 28, 2025, is part of India’s Passport Seva Programme 2.0 (GPSP 2.0), aimed at digitizing and securing consular services for the 3.5 million-strong Indian community in the UAE.

What is the New e-Passport?

The e-Passport features a secure Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) chip embedded in the booklet. This chip stores the holder’s biometric data—including photographs and fingerprints—in an encrypted format, making the document significantly harder to forge. Visually, these passports are identified by a small gold-colored symbol on the front cover, signifying compliance with International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) standards.

Key Benefits for Travelers

The primary advantage of the e-Passport is a streamlined travel experience. Travelers can use automated SmartGates and e-gates at international airports, including those in Dubai and Abu Dhabi, to pass through border control much faster than through manual checks. This technology also enhances data privacy and reduces the risk of identity theft during international travel.

How to Apply

UAE-based Indians can now apply through the Indian Embassy in Abu Dhabi or the Consulate General in Dubai via the mandatory new portal: mportal.passportindia.gov.in. While the application fees remain unchanged, the new system allows for digital uploads of photographs and signatures, significantly reducing processing times. Existing traditional passports remain valid until their date of expiry, but frequent travelers are encouraged to opt for the e-Passport during their next renewal. (Timesofindia)
