New Delhi: Russian President Vladimir Putin has arrived in New Delhi to attend the 18th BRICS summit, accompanied by his high-security convoy. The elaborate setup includes his customized presidential aircraft, popular as the “Flying Kremlin,” alongside his heavily armored Aurus Senat limousine. While heads of state often travel in official jets, Putin uniquely brings his personal armored car for all overseas visits due to tight security protocols.
The Aurus Senat is widely recognized as one of the world’s most secretive and heavily protected vehicles, tailored for Putin’s safety following his 25-year tenure leading Russia. The limousine previously drew global attention when Prime Minister Narendra Modi rode alongside Putin during the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit in China last year. Often referred to as a ‘fortress-on-wheels,’ the full-size luxury vehicle is both bulletproof and blast-resistant. Developed by Russian automaker Aurus Motors, it is a joint effort between Russia’s NAMI state research institute, Sollers JSC, and the UAE’s Tawazun Holding.
Introduced in 2018, the Senat was designed under Russia’s “Kortezh” project, an initiative aimed at producing domestic luxury armored vehicles for government use. Its exterior design takes inspiration from the Soviet-era ZIS-110 limousine. During international trips, Putin’s motorcade typically features nearly two dozen vehicles guarding the armored limousine.
