UDF Finalises Seat Swap: Congress to Take Thiruvambady, IUML to Contest from Pattambi.

MALAPPURAM: After weeks of strategic negotiations, the Congress and the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) have reached a consensus on swapping the high-profile Thiruvambady and Pattambi assembly seats for the 2026 elections. Under the new agreement, the IUML has agreed to relinquish its claim on Thiruvambady, allowing Congress to field its candidate, while the League will move its focus to Pattambi.

The decision was driven by an analysis of “winnability” and shifting demographic factors in both constituencies. While the swap of Kongad and Alathur seats had been finalised earlier, internal discussions are still ongoing regarding a similar exchange for the Punalur and Chadayamangalam seats in Kollam. Initially, the IUML had expressed interest in Thavanur, but shifted to Pattambi following stiff resistance from local Congress units. This tactical rearrangement is seen as an effort to consolidate the UDF’s strength and address internal coordination issues before the official election campaign begins. (TNIE)
