Kerala swelters as heatwave persists; Yellow alert issued for 12 districts.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for 12 districts in Kerala as the state continues to experience soaring temperatures. Maximum temperatures are expected to hit 38°C in Kollam, Kottayam, and Palakkad, while Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Thrissur, Ernakulam, Kozhikode, and Kannur could see mercury levels rising to 37°C.

Thiruvananthapuram, Malappuram, and Kasaragod are likely to record temperatures around 36°C, which is 2°C to 3°C above the seasonal average. High humidity levels are expected to increase physical discomfort across these regions, except in hilly areas.

Health authorities have urged the public to take strict precautions against sunstroke and dehydration. Citizens are advised to avoid direct sunlight between 11 am and 3 pm and stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water, even if not thirsty.

The advisory recommends wearing loose, light-colored cotton clothes and avoiding dehydrating beverages like alcohol, coffee, and tea during the day. Special care must be provided to vulnerable groups, including children, the elderly, and pregnant women.

Educational institutions and workplaces, particularly those involving outdoor delivery services, have been directed to ensure adequate ventilation, water supply, and rest periods to mitigate heat-related risks. Additionally, a high alert has been sounded regarding potential forest fires and fire outbreaks in waste dumping yards due to the extreme heat. (Kerala News)
