Thrissur Pooram to Proceed Without Fireworks; Kudamattom Allowed with 15 Elephants per Side.

THRISSUR: A high-level meeting held today has officially decided to conduct the world-famous Thrissur Pooram without the traditional fireworks display. The decision comes in the wake of the recent tragic explosion at the Thiruvambady Devaswom’s fireworks storage facility. While the fireworks are cancelled, the iconic ‘Kudamattom’ (exchange of parasols) ceremony will take place with 15 elephants each being lined up by the competing sides.

Other major attractions of the Pooram, including the Elanjithara Melam, Madathil Varavu, and the entry of minor poorams, will proceed as per tradition. Although the Paramekkavu Devaswom initially proposed to conduct fireworks, state ministers representing the government clarified that it is legally and technically impossible under the current circumstances. The fireworks materials prepared by Paramekkavu have already been sealed by authorities. The Devaswoms strongly opposed the government’s initial suggestion to skip both Kudamattom and fireworks, arguing that preparations were in the final stages and the ritual exchange of umbrellas is indispensable.

In light of the Mundathikkode accident, the Thiruvambady Devaswom has decided to observe a period of mourning until April 24. During this time, only the ‘Paraeduppu’ rituals will be performed. Additionally, the ‘Chamaya Pradarsanam’ (exhibition of elephant accoutrements), which usually spans multiple days, has been restricted to a single day this year. These adjustments aim to balance the cultural significance of the festival with public safety concerns.
