THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The government is actively considering the reopening of closed toddy shops across the state. Crucial discussions will soon be held under the leadership of the Excise Minister to evaluate the practical feasibility of this move. With the traditional toddy industry currently facing a massive crisis, both shop owners and workers are highly hopeful of a favorable decision from the government.
A total of 1,460 toddy shops were closed down across the state during the tenure of the previous government. As a direct result of these closures, more than 4,500 traditional workers completely lost their primary source of livelihood. These shops were forced to shut down after suffering severe financial losses due to a significant dip in sales following the rapid increase in the number of bars and Consumerfed/Beverages outlets.
However, once a toddy shop is closed, there are numerous practical and legal constraints involved in reopening it. The challenges range from dealing with the high rental costs of suitable commercial buildings to handling potential local protests and public resistance in the designated areas. Despite these major hurdles, the traditional workers who have been engaged in this sector for decades continue to face an unprecedented livelihood crisis.
