THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Shanimol Usman of the Congress party has been elected as the Deputy Speaker of the Legislative Assembly. In the election held inside the house, Shanimol Usman secured 99 votes, while Muhammad Muhsin of the CPI received 34 votes. The three members of the BJP completely abstained from the voting process. Including the Speaker, a total of four members did not cast their votes. Sandeep Varier, Abid Hussain Thangal, and C. K. Hareendran did not turn up to vote. Speaker Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan extended his warm wishes to Shanimol Usman on her victory. Notably, a female Deputy Speaker is entering the Legislative Assembly after a long gap of 31 years.
The presentation and discussion on the motion of thanks to the Governor’s policy address will commence in the house today. M. Vincent will move the motion of thanks in the assembly. The Revenue Minister will clarify the state government’s official stance regarding the eviction drive at Malayidamthuruthu in the house today. There will be no Question Hour during the three days when the motion of thanks is being discussed.
The opposition is all set to raise the issue of price hikes as the first adjournment motion of the 16th Legislative Assembly. Various recent controversies, starting from the Enforcement Directorate (ED) raids at Pinarayi Vijayan’s rented house to the Vande Mataram issue, are bound to erupt during the discussion.
