KOZHIKODE: The Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) has raised a significant political demand urging the central government to constitute a separate Union Territory comprising the Malabar region, with either Kozhikode or Malappuram as its administrative headquarters. Proponents from the organization state that this structural transformation is essential for the comprehensive economic development of North Kerala as well as for national security. VHP State General Secretary Adv. Elaborating on the strategic reasons for this proposal, the VHP leader listed several points emphasizing the benefits of direct central governance. He noted that if Malabar is designated as a Union Territory, the region would receive direct oversight, substantial financial allocations, and prioritized attention from the Central Government for executing major developmental projects and high-end infrastructure installations. This, according to the organization, would systematically accelerate growth in a region that has historically lagged behind in industrial expansion.
This political demand emerged right after the presentation of the State Government’s latest budget, where the Chief Minister confirmed the formation of a special committee to comprehensively study the long-pending proposal to bifurcate the massive Malappuram district. Alongside this announcement, the state budget unveiled several high-profile infrastructure packages for Malappuram. Key projects include a feasibility study for an elevated highway connecting Kohinoor to the Calicut International Airport, upgrading the Malappuram Taluk Hospital into a multi-specialty general hospital, establishing a dedicated regional cancer treatment care center, and moving forward with the foundational steps to carve out a new district.
