THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: High drama and violent scenes unfolded at the Thiruvananthapuram Corporation as a fierce physical clash broke out between LDF and BJP councillors. Following the chaotic altercations, Mayor V V Rajesh and Deputy Mayor G S Ashanath were rushed to the hospital, where they are currently undergoing medical treatment. Physicians have placed a protective plaster cast on Mayor V V Rajesh’s left leg due to the injuries sustained during the melee. The clashes erupted just a day after 19 BJP councillors took their official oaths for a second time, following a High Court directive that nullified their initial swearing-in due to procedural non-compliance with established rules.
The political confrontation reached a boiling point today when LDF councillors launched an aggressive blockade outside the Mayor’s executive chamber. The left coalition parameters demanded the immediate ouster of BJP councillor Sugathan, who is currently incarcerated under the Kerala Anti-Social Activities (Prevention) Act (KAAPA). The protesting LDF members aggressively restricted the Mayor from entering his official workspace, triggering intense shouting matches that rapidly degenerated into physical assault between the rival political factions. Several representatives, including multiple women LDF councillors, sustained physical injuries and were promptly evacuated to medical facilities.
Hospital administrations confirmed that a total of 14 injured individuals, including the Mayor, have sought emergency medical attention at the Thiruvananthapuram Medical College Hospital. Among the seriously injured is Kattaikonam ward councillor Sindhu, who suffered deep scalp wounds during the ruckus requiring four stitches. The LDF leadership released a statement claiming that six of their elected councillors were physically assaulted and injured. Conversely, the BJP camp issued a counter-statement maintaining that six of their own organizational representatives sustained injuries during the corporate council hall showdown.
