THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a weather warning predicting isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall accompanied by lightning and strong gusty winds reaching speeds of up to 50 kmph across Kerala from today until July 4. According to the weather bulletin, an offshore trough at sea level currently runs from the Maharashtra coast to the Karnataka coast. The trough, which previously extended up to the northern Kerala coast, has now shifted toward the Karnataka-Gujarat coast. Furthermore, the meteorological department has indicated the formation of a potential low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal.
Currently, a cyclonic circulation lies over the Northern Bay of Bengal and the adjoining regular territory of Southern Bangladesh. Under its direct influence, a low-pressure area is highly likely to form over the Northwestern Bay of Bengal and its neighboring areas around July 3. As a result of these active atmospheric conditions, light to moderate fairly widespread rainfall is expected over Kerala and Mahi from today until July 5. The state is likely to witness isolated extremely heavy rainfall on July 1 and isolated heavy downpours from July 1 to July 5. The IMD also warned of widespread thunderstorms and squally winds gusting from 40–50 kmph, occasionally touching a maximum of 60 kmph in isolated places.
In view of the intense rain forecast, the IMD has placed Kannur and Kasaragod districts under an ‘Orange Alert’ today, predicting isolated very heavy downpours. The weather agency defines very heavy rainfall as a cumulative measurement ranging from 115.6 mm to 204.4 mm within a 24-hour window, expected to be highly accompanied by severe lightning. Concurrently, a ‘Yellow Alert’ has been sounded for Alappuzha, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, and Wayanad districts for today. The upcoming Yellow Alerts for the subsequent days are scheduled as follows:
- July 2 (Tomorrow): Kozhikode, Kannur, and Kasaragod.
- July 3: Idukki, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Kannur, and Kasaragod.
- July 4: Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Idukki, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Kannur, and Kasaragod. As these regions are highly prone to isolated heavy showers, disaster management authorities have urged the public to stay vigilant.
