KOTTARAKKARA: Kaushal, a young student who sustained life-threatening injuries after a speeding tipper lorry rammed into a bus stop at Nileshwaram in Kottarakkara, has not yet received the medical treatment funds promised by the state government. The health condition of the boy, who is currently battling for his life in a critical Intensive Care Unit (ICU), is reported to be highly alarming. Following the tragic accident, a special state cabinet meeting had officially announced that the government would completely bear the entire treatment expenses of all those injured in the crash. However, the ground reality remains grim as the distressed family has not received any administrative financial backing so far. A special medical board is scheduled to convene tomorrow to assess his medical parameters.
Kaushal was initially rushed to a private super-specialty hospital immediately after the accident. Unable to bear the exorbitant medical bills at the private facility, his financially backward family was forced to shift the child to the Government Medical College Hospital in Thiruvananthapuram for further specialized care. The boy’s father, Santhosh, revealed that they had already spent around ₹5 lakh during the short stay at the private hospital, a sum the impoverished family managed to scrape together with great difficulty. He added that even at the government medical college, they are forced to spend anywhere between ₹15,000 to ₹20,000 daily out of their own pockets for essential medicines and advanced diagnostics, rendering the government’s highly publicized promises meaningless.
Meanwhile, during the same cabinet session, the government had also sanctioned a financial compensation of ₹5 lakh each to the next of kin of the three individuals who lost their lives in the collision. The horrific accident occurred on Tuesday morning around 7:00 AM when a tipper lorry heavily loaded with soil lost control while speeding down a slope, collided with a motorcycle, and plowed directly into a crowded roadside bus shelter. The crash claimed the lives of Harilal (54) from Oduvattoor, Parthip (15), a Class 10 student of Carmel School, and Ajayan Achari (45), a KSRTC employee. Along with Kaushal, others identified as Rishabh Boban, Navaneeth, Jibi Mol, and the tipper driver, Nizam from Chavara, are currently undergoing treatment for severe injuries.
