WASHINGTON/TEHRAN: US President Donald Trump said Sunday that the United States had struck Iran “very hard” overnight and insisted the Strait of Hormuz remained open.
Iran’s recently created Persian Gulf Strait Authority said on Sunday that transit through the Strait of Hormuz was not possible at present, citing what it called “recent illegal movements” by US military forces in the region.
US Central Command on Sunday that Iran did not control the Strait of Hormuz and that it remained an international waterway.
Oman summoned Iran’s ambassador on Sunday to protest drone attacks targeting sites in the governorates of Musandam and Al Wusta, Oman’s foreign ministry said.
Gulf Cooperation Council Secretary-General Jasem Albudaiwi on Sunday condemned continued Iranian attacks targeting the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Oman, Qatar, Kuwait and Jordan, as well as commercial vessels.
The Revolutionary Guards-affiliated Tasnim news agency said Iranian forces had struck US-linked targets in Jordan, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain and Oman in response to US attacks.
The Revolutionary Guards said on Sunday they struck US naval logistics facilities and aircraft carrier refueling platforms at the Omani port of Duqm in retaliation for US attacks.
Several explosions were heard east of the southern Iranian port city of Bandar Abbas and in a coastal area of Qeshm on Sunday, with the cause still unknown, IRGC-affiliated Fars news agency reported.
