Thiruvananthapuram: A homemaker who sought treatment for knee pain in Thiruvananthapuram has lost her eyesight. Sheela, a native of Irinchayam, has filed a complaint against Dr. Jacob Antony of Thiruvananthapuram Medical College, alleging that wrong medication was prescribed to her. Sheela stated that no action has been taken despite lodging complaints with authorities, including the Health Minister. The doctor had treated Sheela at his residence. The doctor explained that an adverse drug reaction caused her condition.
After consuming the prescribed medication, Sheela lost her vision and suffered severe skin eruptions across her body. Sheela claimed that medication for rheumatoid arthritis was prescribed for her knee pain without proper diagnosis. Her condition turned critical within five days of taking the medicine. Sheela mentioned that she refrained from complaining earlier out of fear that further treatment would be denied to her.
However, the doctor clarified that given his medical experience, formal diagnostic tests were not deemed necessary. He confirmed that medication for arthritis was administered and that the condition resulted from a reaction to the drug. Dr. Jacob Antony added that he feels deeply sorry for what happened to the patient.
