KATHMANDU: A severe flash flood in the Himalayan mountain region of Nepal near the Tibet border has swept away several villages and infrastructure development projects. The flooding caused maximum destruction in the Syapru Besi and Timure areas of Rasuwa district. The administration expressed deep concern over expected heavy loss of lives and widespread damage. The deluge was triggered by a sudden surge in the water levels of the Bhote Koshi River, which originates in Tibet and flows through Nepal. The Nepal Disaster Management Authority and local administration issued urgent directives asking residents along the riverbanks to move to higher ground immediately.
Prime Minister Balendra Shah instructed the Nepal Army, police, and disaster response forces to intensify rescue operations in the affected areas. Measures to relocate people from low-lying areas to safer locations are progressing rapidly. The Bhote Koshi River, which flows from Tibet to merge with the Trishuli River in Nepal, later enters India as the Gandak River. In previous years as well, sudden flooding in this river had destroyed the Friendship Bridge connecting the Nepal-China border and caused extensive damage.
