KOLLAM: Following the successful model launched by the Kochi Corporation, the Kollam Corporation is gearing up to introduce the Indira Canteen to provide affordable meals to the public. The project is expected to be launched within the next two months in Kollam city. Under this initiative, citizens can get three meals a day for a total cost of Rs 50.
The proposed rate structure includes breakfast for Rs 10, lunch for Rs 20, and dinner for Rs 10. Takeaway options will also be available for all three meals with an additional nominal packing charge. The corporation is currently holding discussions with various agencies to enable online booking facilities for customers.
The tentative menu consists of idli or dosa with vegetable curry for breakfast, rice with two side dishes, thoran, and pickle for lunch, and chapatis with vegetable curry for dinner. The menu and final pricing structure will be finalized during the upcoming corporation council meeting.
The canteen will operate out of four vacant shop spaces at the Polayathode Shopping Complex. Setting up the infrastructure—including modern kitchen equipment, dining area arrangements, interior design, and restroom facilities—is estimated to cost around Rs 50 lakh. The authorities plan to utilize CSR funds to meet the initial establishment expenses and subsidize food costs in the early phase, aiming to make the model self-sustaining as customer turnout grows.
