KOCHI: In a significant development ahead of the formal trial in the controversial Abhimanyu murder case, the Ernakulam Sessions Court on Monday read out the official chargesheet to the accused persons. A total of 16 accused individuals, who are reportedly active workers of the SDPI and the banned Popular Front of India (PFI), appeared before the sessions court. Upon being read the charges, the accused firmly informed the court that they have not committed any of the crimes alleged by the police department. The prosecution has submitted a comprehensive chargesheet naming a total of 26 accused in connection with this high-profile campus murder. Abhimanyu, an energetic SFI activist of Ernakulam Maharaja’s College, was brutally stabbed to death on July 2, 2018, following a political dispute regarding wall graffiti inside the campus.
Earlier, the case had caught national attention and sparked a massive political controversy when several highly crucial case documents mysteriously went missing from the direct custody of the court. The judicial framework was later able to advance to the current trial proceedings only after the prosecution painstakingly re-created and re-submitted the missing case records. Frustrated by the prolonged delay in getting justice, Abhimanyu’s grieving parents had recently approached the High Court of Kerala. Responding to their urgent plea, the High Court has legally directed the lower court to fast-track the judicial process and successfully conclude the entire trial proceedings within a strict time frame of nine months.
