THRISSUR: A sudden freak tornado (minnal chuzhali) that struck Villadam in Thrissur this morning has caused widespread destruction across the region. Areas including Vilvattam, Nadathara, and Poochatti bore the brunt of the violent storm, which was accompanied by high-velocity winds that uprooted massive trees. In the parking lot of Poochatti Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan School, four large teak trees were completely uprooted by the fierce winds. School children near the Poochatti Bhavan School had a miraculous escape from what could have been a major disaster.
The freak tornado struck the area at around 8:45 AM. Since classes regularly commence at 9:00 AM, the storm hit exactly when children were arriving at the school in auto-rickshaws and other private vehicles. A major tragedy was averted solely due to the presence of mind shown by auto drivers and teachers, who quickly escorted the children to nearby houses and safer locations. Since the uprooted trees crashed directly onto the vehicles, the children standing close by escaped unhurt. The intense wind also completely blew off the roof of the LKG school building. Apart from the four teak trees, a massive mango tree inside the school courtyard was also uprooted.
Three auto-rickshaws and a car parked in the vicinity were severely damaged after the trees collapsed onto them. Fortunately, no casualties or injuries have been reported so far. As the uprooted trees blocked the main roads, it led to severe traffic congestion throughout the locality. Normalcy was restored only after the fire force personnel, along with local residents, cut down and cleared away the debris from the roads.
