Thiruvananthapuram: Chief Minister V. D. Satheesan stated that 26 deaths have been reported so far in the state due to monsoon havoc. 11 people have suffered injuries, and four people are missing. A total of 462 relief camps are operating across the state, housing 27,048 people. Crop damage has been reported across 1,882 hectares. According to preliminary reports, the loss is estimated at ₹66.44 crore. The Chief Minister added during the press conference that 23,537 farmers have been affected by the heavy rains.
Financial assistance of ₹8 lakh will be provided to the families of those who died in the rain-related disaster. Those whose houses were flooded will receive ₹10,000 based on the Village Officer’s report. Assistance of ₹10,000 will be provided to conduct the funerals of the deceased. Previously, ₹4 lakh was provided for constructing houses for those whose homes were completely destroyed; this has been increased to ₹6 lakh. For those who lost both their house and land, the assistance to purchase land and build a house has been increased from ₹10 lakh to ₹12 lakh, the Chief Minister added.
Rajesh’s Demise Painful: CM The demise of R. Rajesh, a native of Kalliyoor in Thiruvananthapuram and a disaster rescue trainer who lost his life while trying to rescue a person stranded in floodwaters at Cherupuzha in Kannur, is deeply painful. Rajesh’s funeral will be conducted with state honours. The Chief Minister informed that it has also been decided to complete and construct his unfinished house.
It was decided to grant financial assistance from the Chief Minister’s Distress Relief Fund to the remaining 248 beneficiaries in Thrissur district who lost their homes in the 2024 landslides and monsoon havoc. The Cabinet meeting also decided to appoint Retd. Justice C. N. Ramachandran as the Chairperson of the Police Complaints Authority.
It was decided to release ₹2025 crore 15 lakh as the first installment of the development fund to be given to local bodies for the 2026-27 financial year. As the previous government had not released the third installment, the Chief Minister announced that an additional ₹136 crore for municipalities and ₹188 crore for corporations has been allocated for last year’s spillover projects. ₹44 crore has been sanctioned for the wages of cooks, and the Chief Minister said that the amount, including the hiked wages, will reach their accounts within two days.
