New Delhi: External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar held a telephonic conversation with Iran’s Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi to convey India’s deep concerns regarding the ongoing hostilities in the Middle East. In a post on X, Jaishankar stated that India strongly condemns attacks on commercial shipping and seafarers by any party.
“Had a tele-conversation with FM Araghchi of Iran this evening. Conveyed our deep concerns at the ongoing hostilities in the region. Strongly urged that attacks on commercial shipping and seafarers be avoided under any circumstance. India condemns any such attack by any party,” EAM Jaishankar posted on X.
He emphasized that India consistently supports dialogue and diplomacy to resolve conflicts and noted that he was briefed on Iran’s perspective regarding current regional developments.
The safety and welfare of Indian seafarers have escalated into a major concern for India due to the surge in missile and drone strikes targeting merchant vessels in global conflict zones.
Jaishankar’s remarks follow a statement by the US Central Command (CENTCOM) on Friday, which noted that forces had redirected 24 commercial vessels, disabled two, and boarded two others as part of an extensive compliance and surveillance operation across the Middle East.
