THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Thiruvananthapuram Corporation Mayor V.V. Rajesh has come out in strong support of BJP Councilor R. Sugathan, who was recently arrested under the Kerala Anti-Social Activities (Prevention) Act (KAAPA). Rajesh declared that full political and legal support will be provided to Sugathan to fight the case. The Mayor also alleged that during the arrest, the police pointed a gun at Sugathan’s 14-year-old son, adding that he would be visiting the councilor’s residence today. He firmly stated that Sugathan is being targeted and has been falsely implicated in the KAAPA case.
The Mayor pointed out that Sugathan won from a ward that had been a CPIM stronghold for years, purely due to the political wisdom of the local electorate. Rajesh stressed that Sugathan had not attacked any police officer and questioned the motive behind the police firing shots to create an atmosphere of terror. He added that there was absolutely no volatile situation in the capital city that warranted arresting a public representative through such extreme and terrifying measures.
The Mayor demanded that if Sugathan is indeed an accused under KAAPA, the police must produce valid documents to substantiate the claim. He stated that he and his party are not ready to accept such charges blindly when presented by a police officer who himself has a questionable track record. As the Mayor, Rajesh promised to take strict stances against the harassment of councilors. He named CI Vipin and SI Abhijith as the masterminds behind this operation, alleging that CI Vipin has a controversial past and was brought into Vattiyoorkavu during the election period through the political influence of a former LDF MLA.
