THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Motorists in Kerala are getting a friendly yet firm reminder to respect pedestrian rights. “Mottu,” the baby elephant mascot of the Kerala Motor Vehicles Department (MVD), has become the star of a new road safety awareness campaign aimed at protecting people at zebra crossings.
Mottu in Action: As part of National Road Safety Month, the Thiruvananthapuram RTO (Enforcement) introduced the mascot at the busy Pazhavangadi Junction. Carrying a mace (gada), the cartoon-style elephant stands at pedestrian crossings to monitor traffic. Drivers who ignore signals or encroach on zebra lines receive a “gentle strike” from Mottu’s mace as a warning. Conversely, those who demonstrate exemplary driving and stop for pedestrians are rewarded with sweets.
Engaging the Community: The MVD believes that Mottu’s friendly, animated appearance will be particularly effective in educating school children and young adults. By making road safety education fun and interactive, the department hopes to foster a culture of mutual respect between motorists and pedestrians.
State-wide Rollout: Following the success of the initial launch in the capital city, Mottu is scheduled to appear at various major junctions across Kerala in the coming weeks. However, officials have warned that while Mottu provides a “sweet” reminder, the department will not hesitate to take strict legal action and impose fines on repeat offenders who continue to violate traffic laws despite these warnings.
