KOLKATA: In a major setback for West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, indications suggest that the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) is heading towards a vertical split. The party’s national spokesperson, Riju Datta, has claimed that internal strife within the party has reached its peak, and around 50 MLAs have already initiated movements to claim the official party symbol.
The cracks became wide open when only six legislators (MLAs) attended a protest rally organized by Mamata Banerjee in Kolkata recently. The internal rebellion within the Trinamool Congress intensified heavily following the party’s dismal defeat in the recent state assembly elections. Following the loss, grassroot level regional leaders have started expressing their discontent openly. Reports indicate that even the newly elected MLAs have strong disagreements with Mamata’s autocratic style of functioning.
The demand for Mamata Banerjee to step down from the party’s top leadership post has gained significant momentum. It has now become clear that it was this growing resentment that led 60 out of the total 80 TMC MLAs to completely boycott a crucial high-level meeting called personally by Mamata Banerjee.
Taking a sharp dig at the ongoing political crisis, senior BJP leader and minister Dilip Ghosh mocked the party, stating, “Only the aunt and nephew (Mamata Banerjee and Abhishek Banerjee) will eventually be left in the Trinamool Congress.” Amid the growing rebellion, Mamata Banerjee had also expelled two dissident MLAs, Ritabrata Banerjee and Sandipan Saha, from the party just a day ago for airing views against the leadership.
