IDUKKI: Union Minister Suresh Gopi has extended a helping hand to a homemaker who shared her grievances regarding bank officials denying her a loan for a self-employment scheme. Suresh Gopi purchased and gifted a brand new autorickshaw at his own expense to Ganga Rishikesh, a resident of Ambatt in Bison Valley, Muttukad. Ganga has been supporting her family for over two decades by working as a daily wage labourer in cardamon plantations. The entire burden of the family fell on Ganga’s shoulders after her husband Rishikesh, a former bus driver, became bedridden 13 years ago due to lifestyle diseases.
With the desire to sustain her family through self-employment, Ganga had submitted an application for a Mudra loan at a bank seven years ago. However, the bank officials turned her away, falsely claiming that no such scheme existed.
Ganga got an opportunity to interact directly with Suresh Gopi when she attended the ‘Kalunku Souhrida Sangamam’ held at Moolamattam on September 30 last year. To attend this event, she rode her scooter for around 130 kilometers from her home in Idukki to reach Moolamattam. When Suresh Gopi enquired about her family welfare, Ganga openly spoke to him about being denied the Mudra loan. Upon hearing her story, Suresh Gopi immediately assured Ganga that he would buy her an autorickshaw.
