THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The free travel scheme for women in KSRTC buses will be initially implemented only in ordinary category buses. The decision was finalized during a high-level meeting held between the Transport Minister and the Chief Minister. The state government had earlier announced that it would ensure free travel for women in KSRTC buses starting from June 15. The recent discussions focus on the implementation strategies of this project. As part of this, a crucial meeting between Transport Minister C P John and Chief Minister V D Satheesan concluded just now at the Secretariat. The move is to limit the scheme to ordinary buses for the first 100 days of its launch. The Transport Commissioner will be directed to study the profit and loss accounts during these 100 days and submit a detailed report. Furthermore, the government will consider introducing ordinary services in assembly constituencies where not even a single ordinary bus is currently operational. All women, without any other eligibility criteria or restrictions, will be allowed to avail of this free travel facility. Since the government has decided to fund the expenses directly, the initial assessment is that the scheme will not become a financial liability for the corporation. The meeting with the Chief Minister has successfully concluded.
Meanwhile, opposition trade unions within the KSRTC have expressed deep concern over the declaration of free travel for women. The CITU maintained that the government must fully absorb any financial liability incurred by KSRTC due to this scheme, pointing out that the execution of the project would bring a multi-crore burden on the government exchequer. On the other hand, the BMS is of the firm view that the government must completely take over the KSRTC to cover any financial deficits that might arise within the institution following the rollout of the free travel scheme.
