THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: An elderly woman openly voiced her anger against BJP leaders during a street protest organized against the Vattiyoorkavu police over the arrest of Vazhottukonam ward councilor Sugathan. The pedestrian, identified as Saraswathy Amma, strongly questioned the rationale behind blocking public roads and asked how common people were expected to reach their homes during such disruptions. She intervened dramatically by walking up and holding the hand of BJP leader Karamana Ajith while he was delivering his inaugural address at the evening protest. As the speech was interrupted, Ajith initially instructed his workers to move her away. However, as the media and onlookers gathered, accompanying BJP councilors tried to pacify Saraswathy Amma, but she refused to back down. Consequently, the BJP leader was forced to abruptly conclude his speech and wrap up the agitation.
The political standoff began after Thiruvananthapuram Corporation councilor Sugathan, who had been absconding for over a month in connection with an attempted murder case, was apprehended by law enforcement. Acting on a tip-off that Sugathan had returned to his residence in Vazhottukonam around 10:00 PM on Tuesday night, a police team led by Vattiyoorkavu SHO Vipin raided the house and arrested him after firing warning shots into the air to deter resistance.
In retaliation to Sugathan’s dramatic arrest, BJP councilors led a major demonstration against the Vattiyoorkavu police yesterday evening. As top leaders and party workers flooded the streets for the agitation, it triggered a massive traffic jam at the busy Vattiyoorkavu Junction. With the program getting delayed, the police struggled to manage the gridlock, causing immense inconvenience to commuters and residents. The rising resentment among the local public finally found its voice through the bold and public confrontation by Saraswathy Amma.
