BENGALURU: The Bengaluru Police have arrested a female caretaker following shocking and highly disturbing revelations of brutal physical abuse and torture of toddlers at a local day care center. The arrested staff member has been identified as Vijayalakshmi. While another individual has been detained for questioning, their official arrest is yet to be recorded. Law enforcement agencies have intensified their search operations to capture the remaining four accused caretakers who went into hiding after the incident came to light. Following the interrogation of three employees yesterday, the police summoned more day care staff to the station today as part of the expanding investigation.
The sheer scale of cruelty emerged when details of the caretakers’ disciplinary methods were uncovered. Toddlers who cried or threw tantrums were reportedly stuffed into washing machines, forced to sit inside European toilet commodes while water was sprayed at them with hand showers, and locked inside dark restrooms. These two-to-three-year-old children were continuously threatened with loud voices from outside the doors. Taking serious note of the unparalleled abuse, Karnataka Home Minister Priyank Kharge issued strict directives to the police department to take uncompromising action against all perpetrators involved.
In the wake of the incident, the State President of the Child Protection Council sent an official letter to Karnataka Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar demanding urgent policy interventions. The Council has requested the immediate formation of a dedicated committee to monitor day care operations on a daily basis and has proposed mandatory police background verification for all hired staff. Furthermore, Child Protection Council members are preparing to conduct direct, surprise inspections across all day care facilities in the state, asserting that no center violating Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) will be allowed to function. With Bengaluru housing a vast network of IT parks and associated day care facilities, the police are planning comprehensive regulatory crackdowns to ensure child safety.
