Karunagappally: The Mata Amritanandamayi Math has stepped in to support the Indian Navy’s search and rescue operation for a young man missing after a fishing boat capsized at sea. To facilitate the landing of search-and-rescue helicopters looking for the missing youth, Gautam Krishna, the Math constructed an emergency helipad overnight at the Amritapuri Engineering College grounds.
The urgent construction work began following a direct instruction from Mata Amritanandamayi, acting upon a special request made by Union Minister of State for Tourism Suresh Gopi and the Kollam District Collector. The request reached the Ashram late on Saturday night. Math officials stated that staff, university personnel, and volunteers worked through the night to ensure the project was completed on time.
Ashram vehicles operated continuously throughout the night to source and transport construction materials and equipment from local contractors. Thanks to the tireless efforts of the volunteers, the helipad was completed and handed over to the Indian Navy by 10 AM on Sunday. Meanwhile, intensive search operations by the Navy and Coast Guard to trace Gautam Krishna remain underway.
Previously, during the 2005 tsunami, the Amritanandamayi Math had carried out relief operations on a war footing in the region. Their efforts to provide food and medical supplies to affected families for several months garnered international recognition, alongside their notable housing and rehabilitation projects along the coast.
