US President Donald Trump on Tuesday attributed the mass student protests in France to Islam and migration, advancing his global right-wing narrative ahead of crucial midterm elections at home.
“What’s happening in France is nothing less than out of control mass migration,” Trump stated in a post shared on his Truth Social network.
“This isn’t about schools, this is about Islam wanting to take over a once great Country!” he added.
Since late September, French students have blocked entrances to hundreds of high schools across the nation to demand better conditions, with the protests occasionally erupting into clashes with security forces.
A quarter of a million demonstrators took to the streets across France on Tuesday.
Trump provided no further elaboration or evidence for his claims. In France, authorities have established no direct link between the student movement and any religious or identity-driven demands.
However, prominent figures within Trump’s Make America Great Again (MAGA) movement have leveraged the French unrest to underscore their stance on immigration ahead of next month’s US midterm elections.
MAGA commentators repeatedly shared footage of the French protests in the days leading up to Trump’s statement.
“The riots in France are a clear warning to the rest of the West,” posted Trump ally Glenn Beck on X on Monday. “What is happening in France today is all part of an international network of socialists working to dismantle the West.”
“This will come to America if the Democrats take power again,” wrote right-wing commentator Dave Rubin to his 1.6 million followers, attaching footage filmed at a French railway station.
