NEW DELHI: Union Home Minister Amit Shah has commended ‘Operation Toofan’—the state’s anti-narcotics drive—and assured full support for the initiative, State Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala said. Speaking after a high-level meeting in New Delhi, Chennithala stated that the Centre will extend financial and logistical assistance to Operation Toofan by integrating it into the Union Government’s flagship ‘Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan’.
The Minister highlighted that the state administration informed the Union Home Minister regarding the imminent implementation of 30 percent reservation for women in the police force. Chennithala added that multiple project proposals aimed at modernizing the police force were submitted, alongside a formal request for the expedited release of pending central funds allocated for state law enforcement development.
Strategic proposals for prison infrastructure expansion were also presented during the meeting. The state submitted plans for an open jail project linked with the Poojappura Central Prison, alongside a formal proposal requesting sanction for a new central jail facility at Nettukaltheri.
Earlier, Ramesh Chennithala had dispatched an official letter to the Union Home Minister calling for a joint conference of central and state governments to tackle drug trafficking. The communication emphasized that Kerala was actively implementing counter-narcotic measures such as ‘Operation Toofan’ and stressed the urgent need for a coordinated national strategy.
Clarifying other administrative matters, Chennithala stated that the ongoing Vigilance probe involving Gyanesh Kumar was not raised during his meeting with the Union Home Minister. Meanwhile, the Minister refrained from commenting on the controversy surrounding Kalady University.
