From Serving Tea for Rs 50 to Ruling Rs 4,000 Crore Blockbusters: The Untold Story of Yash.

BENGALURU: Today, Yash is the poster boy for two of the biggest projects in Indian cinema — the Rs 4,000-crore mythological epic Ramayana and the Rs 500-crore action entertainer Toxic: A Fairy Tale for Grown-ups. Apart from playing lead roles, he is also co-producing both films. However, his rise to pan-India superstardom is a story filled with as much drama and determination as a blockbuster movie.

Years later, Yash has established himself as an unshakeable box-office force. His mother once revealed that his father was unemployed when Yash was born. His father also recalled how the family raised him in Mysuru on a daily wage of just Rs 14. Coming from such a modest background, aiming to become a film star was anything but easy.

After completing Class 12 in Mysuru, Yash moved to Bengaluru to work as an assistant director. However, the initial opportunity slipped through his hands. Even with just Rs 300 in his pocket, Yash refused to abandon his dream and return home. Staying back, he slowly transitioned into theatre. Joining a drama troupe, he worked backstage for a daily allowance of Rs 50, serving tea and cleaning up after performers left. Finally, in 2004, he landed his first lead role in a play.

That same year, Yash made his television debut with the serial Uttarayana, where he met Radhika Pandit, who later became his wife. Soon, movie offers began to trickle in. Right from the beginning, Yash was clear about the kind of actor he wanted to be. He insisted on reading full scripts before signing projects, a professional practice that was often mistaken for arrogance in those days. In 2007, he made his feature film debut with Jambada HuduGi, around the time he adopted his screen name ‘Yash’. From there on, he embarked on a journey to become the star audiences wished to see on screen.

Shortly after his debut, Yash got the opportunity to step in for another actor in Moggina Manasu (2008). Though his role alongside Radhika Pandit was small, his screen presence captivated the audience. The performance earned him the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actor, marking a major turning point in his career. While success did not happen overnight, Yash remained on the right track, laying the foundation for the massive chapters that followed in his life.
