EVIAN: Leaders of the Group of Seven (G7) nations on Wednesday formally welcomed the groundbreaking diplomatic agreement between the United States and Iran. In an official joint declaration released during the summit in France, the global powers stated that the breakthrough offers a major strategic opening to prevent Tehran from developing a nuclear weapon while systematically addressing regional security and ballistic missile-related threats.
“We welcome the announcement of a deal between the United States and Iran, secured under the strong leadership of President Trump, with the structural support of mediating countries,” the G7 leaders noted in a comprehensive statement addressing pressing geopolitical issues. The group emphasized that the preliminary agreement provides “an historic opportunity to prevent Iran from acquiring any nuclear weapon and tackling the threats related to its regional and ballistic activities.” The statement further added that the G7 members strongly support this peace process and remain fully prepared to contribute actively to its long-term implementation.
The G7 also called for sustained diplomatic engagements following the signing of the US-Iran memorandum of understanding. They underlined that any subsequent, legally-binding follow-on negotiations must holistically address the asymmetric threats posed by Iran “in the region and beyond” and must actively involve key international watchdogs, including the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). “We reaffirm that Iran will never obtain a nuclear weapon,” the declaration stated. Turning their focus to the conflict in Lebanon, the G7 tied its regional stabilization support to an immediate ceasefire and the total disarmament of the Iran-backed militant group Hezbollah.
“In Lebanon, we support, through an immediate robust ceasefire, the Lebanese leadership’s efforts to achieve the disarmament of Hezbollah and the monopoly of arms, and to protect Lebanon’s territorial integrity and sovereignty with the appropriate international security guarantees,” the joint statement read. Additionally, the G7 leaders strongly backed the immediate resumption of commercial maritime traffic through the vital Strait of Hormuz, asserting that “the right of transit passage without restrictions or tolls is the bedrock of international trade.”
The leaders agreed that a multinational defensive initiative, independently led by France and the United Kingdom, would play a critical role in safeguarding international merchant vessels, reassuring global shipping operators, and conducting essential sea-mine clearance operations. Recognizing the vulnerabilities exposed by the recent geopolitical blockades in the Persian Gulf, the G7 nations also pledged to drastically reduce global vulnerability to the Strait of Hormuz by accelerating the diversification of international energy supply routes and boosting domestic emergency fuel reserves.
