In Remembrance Of Ancestors: Karkidaka Vavu Rituals Underway Across Kerala.

Thiruvananthapuram: Devotees across Kerala are observing Karkidaka Vavu today in memory of their departed ancestors. Ancestral rites and Bali Tharpanam rituals commenced early in the morning at the iconic Aluva Manappuram on the banks of the Periyar River. Similar holy ceremonies are actively progressing across major pilgrim centers in the state, including Tiruvallam Sree Parasurama Temple, Varkala Papanasam Beach, Thirunavaya Navamukunda Temple, and Thirunelli Papanasini. At Aluva Manappuram, facilities for performing the rituals will remain open until 3:00 PM.

The main rituals at Aluva Manappuram began around 4:00 AM, though devotees had started gathering at the venue since yesterday evening. Priests are currently leading special pujas and prayers. As per traditional beliefs, offering Bali Tharpanam on the day of Karkidaka Vavu grants eternal peace to the souls of ancestors. Devotees arrive to perform the rites after observing a strict single-meal rice fast (Orikkal) on the preceding day.

To facilitate smooth transit for the thousands arriving at various ghats, KSRTC has arranged special bus services. Meanwhile, with weather alerts indicating rough sea conditions and strong currents, authorities have strictly urged the public to cooperate with directions issued by the police and local administration.

Key Safety Precautions

  • Water Safety: Strictly adhere to the instructions issued by the Fire Force, Police personnel, and Lifeguards deployed at the sites.
  • Crowd Management & Health: Move in organized queues to avoid heavy overcrowding inside Bali Mandapams. Never cross protective barricades or safety ropes.
