KOLLAM: Eravipuram police have arrested two individuals involved in smuggling and distributing large quantities of counterfeit cigarettes brought from other states under the brand names of leading companies. The arrested persons have been identified as Jose Prakash, residing at Thomas Villa in Panamoottil Nagar, Eravipuram Vadakkumbhagam, and Prashanthan from Padmashree Veedu in Eravipuram Kambikattezhikam. A massive haul of fake cigarettes valued at over ₹15 lakh was seized from their residences.
Based on a tip-off, police conducted a raid at Jose Prakash’s residence and recovered counterfeit cigarettes worth ₹12 lakh. Subsequently, stock worth ₹3.5 lakh was seized from Prashanthan’s house, which he had purchased and stored from Jose Prakash. The formal arrests were recorded only after officials from major cigarette manufacturing companies were brought in to inspect the seized goods and officially confirm them as fake.
The police team that nabbed the culprits was led by SI Abhishek, Grade SI Ajith, and CPOs Suchi and Sajin, acting under the directions of Eravipuram SHO Pradeep. Following a medical examination, the accused will be produced before the court and remanded to judicial custody.
