Private Bus Sector in Crisis; Operators Threaten to Suspend Services from June 15.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The private bus sector in the state is facing a severe financial crisis, making it highly difficult to continue operations. The Private Bus Operators’ Federation State Secretary, Hamza, has warned that they will be forced to suspend all bus services across the state from June 15 if their grievances are not addressed.

The continuous hike in fuel prices has severely hit the sector, with diesel prices skyrocketing by Rs 8 within the last two weeks alone. Given the grim situation, Hamza demanded that the government must immediately provide fuel subsidies to private buses and completely waive off the hefty road tax levied on them.

The Federation noted that the private sector should be given fair consideration when free travel for women is implemented in KSRTC buses. More than half of the passengers traveling on private buses are women. Therefore, providing free travel exclusively on government buses will heavily impact the private sector, causing their daily revenue to plunge below half.

Hamza pointed out that nearly 60 percent of their daily collection is currently spent solely on purchasing diesel. On top of that, operators are forced to pay lakhs of rupees as road tax. He suggested that the government should take over private buses by paying a fixed rental amount calculated per kilometer.

The Federation clarified that they are not against providing free travel to women. However, they urged that the government should formulate a balanced transport policy that treats both KSRTC and the private sector equally. Although the matter was thoroughly explained to the Chief Minister and the Transport Minister earlier, the State Secretary criticized that the government went ahead and took a hasty decision without proper planning.
