Alappuzha: The Mannar police have taken the chief priest (Melshanthi) of a local temple into custody for allegedly stealing sacred gold ornaments from the deity. The accused has been identified as Radhakrishnan Namboothiri (59), a native of Kuttamberoor Ilamon Madom, who was serving as the chief priest at the Kuttamberoor Kunnathoor Sri Durgadevi Temple in Alappuzha district.
The fraud came to light just as the accused was scheduled to vacate his position on Saturday following an order from the Chengannur Sub-Court. The court had ordered his removal based on detailed reports submitted by the temple head priest (Tanthri) and others regarding prior complaints against him. As part of the transition process, an official inventory audit was conducted under the leadership of the court-appointed temple receiver, Adv M Sreelekha.
During the audit, suspicion arose regarding the authenticity of the sacred ornaments adorned on the deity, prompting authorities to summon a gold appraiser for a detailed verification. The inspection revealed that approximately three sovereigns of genuine gold ornaments had been stolen and replaced with imitation fake jewelry. According to authorities, one gold necklace and two sacred thalis were found missing from the temple repository.
