US Treasury Secretary Criticizes Europe Over India Trade Deal and Russian Oil Stance.

NEW YORK (Jan 29): US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has expressed deep disappointment with European nations following the finalization of a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between India and the European Union. In an interview with CNBC’s ‘Squawk on the Street’ on Wednesday, Bessent criticized the EU for its unwillingness to align with Washington in imposing tariffs on India over its continued procurement of Russian oil.

The US Treasury Secretary noted that European countries are on the front lines of the ongoing Ukraine-Russia conflict, making their refusal to join the US in penalizing India’s oil purchases particularly disheartening. When questioned about whether this “massive” trade deal between India and Europe threatens American interests—especially as these nations bypass Washington to advance free trade—Bessent remarked that while countries must do what they believe is best for themselves, the lack of coordination on Russian energy sanctions remains a major concern for the United States.

The friction highlights a growing divide between US and EU policies regarding trade with New Delhi, as Europe prioritizes its economic partnership with India despite Washington’s pressure to isolate Moscow further through secondary sanctions. (PTI)
