KOCHI: R Nishanthini, a 2008-batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officer of the Kerala cadre, has scripted history by becoming the first woman Police Commissioner to head the Kochi City Police. She assumes command of the urban police formation amidst several key law and order challenges facing the force. An engineering graduate who entered the civil services, Nishanthini brings nearly two decades of administrative and operational experience in the IPS.
Over her career, Nishanthini has managed critical district-level law enforcement operations, intelligence wings, and senior supervisory roles, including assignments as Inspector General of Police (IG), South Zone, and IG (Intelligence). Prior to her landmark posting as the Kochi Commissioner, she was serving as the IGP, South Zone.
Outlining her operational priorities, Commissioner Nishanthini emphasized continuity in ongoing anti-crime campaigns. “Kochi is a city with which I am well familiar. The state government is executing multiple policing initiatives here, with ‘Operation Toofan’ being a major campaign. My primary focus is to ensure uninterrupted continuity in these drives and launch decisive crackdowns against the illicit trade and consumption of narcotic substances across the city,” she stated.
While maintaining that professional policing duties remain gender-neutral, Nishanthini acknowledged the symbolic impact her milestone appointment holds for the general public. “I do not differentiate between male and female officers in policing operations and will discharge my duties with the same professional rigor as my counterparts,” she reaffirmed.
