CHENNAI: The Madras High Court has issued an order directing the state government to ensure that no cows or calves are slaughtered in Tamil Nadu, either on Bakrid or any other days. The ruling was passed by a division bench comprising Justice G.R. Swaminathan and Justice V. Lakshminarayanan. The court directly instructed the Tamil Nadu Chief Secretary and the Assistant Director General of Police (ADGP – Law and Order) to ensure strict implementation of this directive across the state.
The court’s action came while considering a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed by K. Surya Prashanth, a resident of Coimbatore. The primary demand in the petition was to completely prohibit the slaughtering of cows and cattle in public places. Agreeing with the petitioner’s concerns, the bench issued binding instructions to the top authorities to uphold the law stringently.
