CHENNAI: Acclaimed Tamil film director and veteran actor Bharathiraja passed away on Wednesday. He was 84. The legendary filmmaker breathed his last at his residence in Chennai following age-related health complications. The news of his demise was officially confirmed by the Tamil Film Producers Council.
Bharathiraja made his grand directorial debut over three decades ago with the landmark cinematic masterpiece ‘16 Vayathinile’. Beyond being a highly celebrated and masterful director, he successfully left an indelible mark on Indian cinema as a producer, screenwriter, and versatile actor.
In recognition of his monumental and holistic contributions to Indian cinema, the Government of India honored him with the prestigious Padma Shri award in the year 2004. Reflecting his deep cultural ties and close affinity with Kerala, the veteran auteur had also served as the esteemed Chairman of the Jury for the Kerala State Film Awards in 2013.
