TEHRAN: The US Central Command announced that American forces struck Iranian air defense systems, ground control stations, and surveillance radar sites near the strategic Strait of Hormuz in response to the downing of a US helicopter. Following these intense overnight US strikes, Iran opened fire toward Jordan, Bahrain, and Kuwait.
IRGC-linked media reported on Wednesday that Iran’s overnight missile and drone operation against the US regional bases successfully hit 70% of its intended targets. However, nearly all of the missiles and drones launched by Iran at US military facilities in the region were intercepted, Reuters reported, citing initial US military assessments.
Contradicting the US narrative, Iran’s Revolutionary Guards claimed that 21 targets at US air and naval bases across the region were struck as part of its retaliatory operations. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi firmly warned the United States that any attack or threat against Iran would be met with an immediate response, following the reported US strikes on Iranian military assets.
As efforts continue to secure a broader diplomatic agreement between Tehran and Washington, the UN secretary-general’s personal envoy for the Middle East conflict, Jean Arnault, has arrived in Washington for high-level talks with US officials and other key stakeholders. Meanwhile, an explosion was heard near Qeshm Island in southern Iran on Wednesday, semi-official Mehr News reported, citing local sources. The report noted that the exact cause was not immediately clear, adding that the sound may have originated from a distant blast or ongoing military activity in the Strait of Hormuz.
