KOLLAM: Chathannoor MLA B.B. Gopakumar has received a death threat and verbal abuse over a phone call from an unidentified individual. The incident took place around 4:30 PM on Thursday afternoon.
The unidentified caller initially contacted the MLA demanding employment. When the MLA expressed his inability to provide a job, the caller hung up the phone, only to ring back shortly after.
During the second call, the individual demanded the contact number of the Kazhakoottam MLA. Upon being denied the number, the caller unleashed a barrage of verbal abuse and issued a direct death threat. MLA Gopakumar lodged an official complaint with the Kollam City Police Commissioner. Acting on the Commissioner’s instructions, the Chathannoor police registered a case and initiated a probe, with reports indicating that central intelligence agencies have also launched an investigation.
Preliminary police investigation has revealed that the phone call originated from a SIM card registered under the name of an Ernakulam native. However, the exact identity of the caller remains unclear. Gopakumar is one of the three BJP MLAs in Kerala, having been elected to the State Legislative Assembly in the 2026 Assembly elections.
